September 6, 1984

Local girls who attended a week of physical and spiritual renewal are Wendy Spinks, Coren Groth and Cami Kearl. Their adult leaders from the area are Gloria McCoy and Sandy Albright.

St. Croix Care Center may open December 1, if the present schedule keeps up, President Dick Truax announced.

"Over the year, I have been many places and made new friends, yet there is still no place like Prescott. I've developed a greater sense of pride for my home town and its community," Miss Prescott, Theresa Simon said, while reflecting on her reign.

Drugs with a street value of approximately $100,000 were discovered in a raid on August 31 in a rural Plum City home in Union Township.

Pierce County sheriff candidates are Terry H. Dubois, James Furuglyss, Ray Huppert and James Hines.

With six seconds to go, the Spring Valley football team was on the Prescott Cardinal 6-yard-line. Coach Sherm Toufar was solemn and waited with anxiety. The Cards held, taking their season opener by a score 8-0.

Roy J. Finley, 381 Dakota Street, has been chosen as the 1984 Prescott Daze Grand Marshal. "It's an honor that's long overdue," Dr. Scott Williamson of the Chamber of Commerce said. Finley has probably represented Prescott at more meetings, and a greater variety of meetings, than anyone else in town. He's one of the Wisconsin representatives on the Mississippi River Parkway Commission, a 10-state group plus Canada and he's also a member of the Pierce County Library Board.

September 27, 1979

PHAA David J. Brunkhorst was assigned to the Navy Recruiting Branch Station at River Falls, as a recruiter assistant under Recruiting Assistance Program.

Dennis J. Bruegl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bruegl, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force recently.

Airman Curtis M. Wallis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Worden M. Wallis of 642 Campbell, Prescott, has been assigned to Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., after completing Air Force Basic Training.

President Carter's energy trip down the Mississippi might have one unexpected result. During his recent trip downstream on the steamboat Delta Queen, President Carter noted that the entire lock and dam system on the Mississippi River Produces only 165 megawatts of electricity, compared to an Army Corps of Engineers estimate that it could produce 2,400 megawatts. Carter was expected to issue an executive order detailing plans to increase power production along the river.

The city of Prescott has once more been delayed in the selling of the plot of land located on South Locust Street north of hwy. Q to the people interested in building an apartment house on the site. There is no doubt that Pierce County intends the land to belong to the city of Prescott, but when the deed to the land was drawn up, the land had not been plotted into lots; therefore, an unintentional discrepancy in the description of the land is delaying the sale of it.

As we went to press this week we received word from Pierce County Judge Bill McEwen that former county Judge Paul A. Magdanz had passed away Tuesday. Out of respect to him the Pierce County Court will be closed on the day of his funeral. Arrangements are pending.

October 8, 1959

Edwin Henning was the winner of the treasure hunt on Children's Days. He won a $25 bond.

The new Miss Prescott is Diane O'Brien, crowned by Anita Schaffer, last year's queen.

The Soap Box Derby went off in good fashion. With Jerry Wolf taking first honors this year.

Mr. Edward B. Savage, son of Mrs. E.W. Savage and the late Reverend E.W. Savage, left on Sunday morning for Cairo, Egypt, where he will be again take up his duties at the American University of Cairo after a two years absence while instructing at the University of Minnesota and procuring his degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Payments to wool producers in Pierce County under the wool incentive program for the 1958 marketing year has reached a total of $23,929.00 at the end of August, according to Millard Nelson of the county Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation office.

Leaving straw to rot in the fields will get a farmer as much for his money as lighting a pipe with a ten dollar bill. Ivan H. Loughary, dairy specialist of the Wyoming agricultural extension service, says:"Use that straw for bedding down your dairy cows, especially since the bedding problem always becomes acute during the winter months."

September 26, 1929

An increased number of wisconsin dairymen will be eligible for recognition on the herd honor roll, which will be a feature of the national dairy exposition in St. Louis, October 12 to the 19. There are 1,706 Badger herds eligible, according to Roy T. Harris. Herds that are to receive the distinction must consist of five or more animals that average more than 300 animals that average more than 300 pounds of butter fat for the 12 months ending June 30, 1929.

Henry F. Leseman passed away at his home here Sunday evening. He has been sick for the past ten years and the past eight years has been an invalid. The direct cause of his death was cancer from which he has suffered the past year.

The Minnesota National Guard training camp at Lake City which has been used for nearly 40 years, will be abandoned after next year and a new camp will be established near Little Falls, Brigadier General Ellard A. Walsh, adjutant general of Minnesota announced.
