Brickhouse & Bentz Band& Broadway...Oh my!
Not every customer who walks into Brickhouse Music in River Falls knows the owners, Tommy and Jen, nor their history with the burgeoning music store. For instance, most folks who have patronized Brickhouse for the past 10 years do not know that Tommy's first instrument was the violin that it was what paved his love of music, and prepped him for the many instruments to come...the oboe, the saxophone, the guitar, the bass, the drums and of course, the cherry on top for any singer-songwriter, the voice. Most of the people who have heard of the Tommy Bentz Band know that Tommy has a great knowledge of many genres of music which is infused into his songwriting and playing style, but they may not know that Tommy went to college in Winona, MN, that he graduated with the first Music Business Degree that was given there it was tailored to fit the music department that year, and by graduation, Tommy had already started Brickhouse Music.
Contrary to popular belief, the name "Brickhouse" did not come from the Commodore's funky song, "Brick House", but was titled when Tommy started the company in the basement of his parents' brick home in Alma, Wisconsin...fitting title. Think of it with a funky back-beat and you won't forget it when you need to rent that flute or clarinet for your daughter in beginning band, or when you want to record yourself singing grandma's favorite song at their in-house professional recording studio, Velvet Brick Studios.
Though the Tommy Bentz Band won a trip through Icelandair to Liverpool, England to play their contest-winning version of "If I Needed Someone" at the Cavern Club with Pete Best in attendance, customers won't just find guitars, basses, drums, P.A. and keys at Brickhouse Music. There's a huge selection of sheet music, which is presided over by Jen Burleigh-Bentz, Tommy's wife and previous leading lady of the hit musical MAMMA MIA!, on Broadway. No longer longing to be on the Big White Way, Jen is back in River Falls, stocking the store with the best musicals, popular titles and instrument specific must-haves. If you don't find Jen in the store, she is probably working on her next theatre adventure at one of the Actor's Union houses in Minneapolis or St. Paul. But regardless of whether or not she needs to be learning her lines, Jen takes care of the special orders. One of the Brickhouse specialties is the ability to order virtually anything available in print for the customer. Jen works one-on-one with the publishing companies, and if they have it, she can get it.
Brickhouse, however, is not just Jen & Tommy. Without the amazing Instrument Repair Technicians and spot-on knowledgeable sales staff, Brickhouse Music would not be what it is today. Brickhouse Music Academy, as well, would not be serving over 350 families a week with private lessons for music students if it weren't for the outstanding teaching staff that Jen and Tommy feel fortunate to house. Rite Of Spring
You know the seasons have changed when swingers - at least the ones with a set of golf clubs in their hands - start lining up at Clifton Hollow Golf Club looking to launch a little white ball down a lush green fairway. It's an iconic moment that rivals the first robin of spring, opening day at the ballpark, and maybe, just maybe the season's first steak on the grill.
Spring is finally here and the staff at Clifton Hollow GC couldn't be happier. Clifton Hollow GC is rolling into their 34th year as one of the most established and favorite golf courses in the St. Croix Valley. Located 10 minutes north of Prescott off County Road F and 820th Avenue, Clifton Hollow GC is a local golf success story.
Designed by the late Dr. Gordon Emerson, Clifton Hollow GC opened as a 9 hole course in 1974 under then owner Lunny Kuschel. Over the next ten years, Lunny would add a back 9, a 9 hole Par III, a supper club - and the icing on the cake - the area's only mini golf course. The latter two didn't last but the 18 hole and Par III courses were purchased by the Egeberg family in 1987 and to this day still run under the guidance of brothers Chuck and Don Egeberg.
Today Clifton Hollow Golf Club boasts not only the finest course conditions in the area, but a thriving membership that has made it a cornerstone course for regional golfers.
The 18 hole championship course at Clifton Hollow GC is filled with both subtle and glaring challenges. Take for instance the signature 14th hole, a seemingly harmless 171 yard par 3; tee shots are hit over what's known as "The Hollow" where anything short of the green is a bogey at best, long means a knee-knocking bunker shot to a runaway green, and on the green is no easy par. And while other holes certainly deserve recognition, thereís no better finishing hole in the area than the stunning 450 yard (blue) 18th hole. Itís a deceptive par 4 where a well hit drive gets you to the edge of "The Hollow" leaving you with an elevated 200 yard second shot down to a generous but sloping green protected by water, woods, and plenty of thick rough.
While the course provides plenty of challenges for all levels, the golf rates at Clifton Hollow GC make it accessible for everyone. Chippewa Valley Technical College-River Falls Campus
Chippewa Valley Technical College, part of the Wisconsin Technical College System, serves an 11 county district with 41 high schools. The River Falls Campus opened in 1999 to serve growing western Wisconsin and Pierce County and is located at 500 S. Wasson Lane, at the intersection of highways 35 and 29. Less than a mile down the road from CVTC is the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The 20,000 square foot facility has 11 classrooms for programming. In addition to the multi-media equipped classrooms, there are two computer labs and a large commons area which provides study and lunch space for students. Although a relatively new facility, the campus is already crowded, and studies are underway to determine how the River Falls Campus might grow to meet the needs of the increasing population and area businesses. The hours of operation vary, but the campus is generally open from 7 AM to 9 PM, Monday through Thursday, from 7 AM to 4 PM on Friday and 8 AM to 4 PM on Saturdays. Enrollment services are available at the River Falls Campus: registration, counseling, transcripts, and Compass placement tests. In addition, the campus has staff to assist students with admission, financial aid and registration processes. In addition to assisting degree-seeking students, this program offers free help in reading, math, writing, basic computer skills and preparation for the HSED and GED to the general public. Professional development and training services are also available for businesses requiring customized training, safety, forklift operation, conflict resolution, teambuilding and Microsoft Office products.
The degree programs offered at the River Falls Campus include: Business Management, Criminal Justice, Medical Assistant, Nursing-Associate Degree, Nursing-Advanced Placement, Nursing Assistant, Paralegal, Paramedic Technician, University Transfer and Wood Technics. In addition, students may complete many of the general education courses that transfer into other programs within the Technical College System or the UW System. The Bierstube
On December 15, 1962, Lawrence William Yanz opened a bar/restaurant at the junction of Highway 61 and 55 in Hastings, MN. called the Bierstube. Larry started with the open grill concept at the original Bierstube. Reubens, brats, pop and 3.2 beer were popular original offerings. The famous sizzling heart steak and delicious garlic toast were shortly added to the menu. In recent years German dishes including the Deutschland sampler platter have been added to the menu.
The original Bierstube in Hastings is currently owned by Larry's sons, Jim and Mike. Jim, Mike and their families take pride in owning and operating their family restaurant. They are working hard to thrive as the original, true locally owned neighborhood bar and grill amongst the ever growing non-locally owned corporate chain restaurants.

Red Wing Glass
Don Sahli was a young man when his Dad and Mom decided to move from Bloomington, MN to Red Wing to open a glass shop. Virgil and Rita Sahli wanted to build a company based on customer satisfaction and good service. Red Wing Glass opened January 1, 1970 in a modest building on Old West Main Street. They moved their family of six children here and began their journey as owners of this new company. Later, the modest building became too small and Virgil & Rita decided to move across the street to a building that would fit the growing business' needs.
Once their children became old enough to work, each one helped out in any way that was needed. Two of the five boys decided to stay with the business and eventually bought it from their parents. In 1990, Don and Ron were the new owners of this business.
In 2000, Ron had an excellent opportunity to buy a glass shop in Alexandria, MN. He and his wife and children remain there to this day. Don and his wife, Joyce, were now the new owners of Red Wing Glass.
In 2000, Don and Joyce decided to relocate their business to the present location of 805 Tile Drive. The store hours have remained the same over the years being open M-F 8:00-5:00 and Saturdays 8:00-Noon.
Don and Joyce are very proud of their employees. Lori Wright oversees everyday operations. Joe Fox heads up the commercial side of the business. Richard Heschke & Kit Springer help him out. Adam Bartlewski and Matt Chowen work with the residential department. Our auto department employees John Oien and Rick Forsman. Dan Plein is their accountant.
The Commercial Department provides windows, doors, entrance ways for interior and exterior openings and all glass needs for businesses, churches, etc. Residential takes care of shower doors, mirrors, table tops, storm windows, screens, window tinting, or any glass needs for the home. Our Auto Department replaces windshields and side glass on automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, machinery or any vehicle, plus window tinting.
Don & Joyce's goal remains the same as Virgil &
Rita's with customer satisfaction and good service being first place. Along
with that is giving their customers service they can not find anywhere else
such as a big warehouse, or a "one size fits all" type business.
They are thankful for the support the community has given them over all
these years.
