Baseball, softball teams get through tough spring
by Jason Strangis
In spite of a cold, windy and rainy spring with many sporting events cancelled because of bad weather, the Prescott High School baseball and softball teams have battled through the elements to post strong regular seasons.
As usual, the baseball team is challenging for another conference title. The Cardinals (9-2 overall, 7-2 Middle Border Conference) trail Baldwin-Woodville by one game in the final week of the regular season. Ellsworth was in the third place.
The Cardinals will travel to Baldwin on May 15 in a showdown that could determine the league champion. On May 19, Prescott travels to River Falls and ends the regular season on May 20 against Durand.
The regional playoffs begin on May 23.
Last Friday, Prescott pulled out a 2-1 victory at home over New Richmond. Senior pitcher Luke Huebner shut down the Tigers by allowing just four hits and recording 12 strikeouts in eight innings.
Jack Stangl got the winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Meanwhile, the Lady Cardinals softball team has enjoyed a much better regular season than the previous year. The team easily topped their win total from last year with a 7-7 overall record.
"I'm content (with that record)," first-year head coach Matt Smith said. "We've been consistent, played hard and put ourselves in positions to win. We've been in almost every game."
Top hitters this spring are junior left fielder Mary Johnson (.395 average) and freshman catcher Alyssa Krings (.350). They are the RBI leaders with 10 each.
Junior Chloe Carlson has been the ace on the mound with a 7-4 record and a 2.59 ERA.
Despite a solid regular season, the Lady Cards and other league teams fell short of traditional powerhouse New Richmond, which was undefeated in conference play.
The Lady Cards start regional playoffs at home against Mondovi on May 15. Prescott is seeded third, behind Arcadia and Spring Valley.
"It's a tough region," Smith said.
Krings awarded with Comcast scholarship
Benjamin Krings, a senior at Prescott High School, is among the 38 students in the Twin Cities area selected to receive a $1,000 college scholarship from the Comcast Foundation. The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program, one of the Comcast Foundation's signature community investment programs, recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership skills, academic achievement and a commitment to community service.
"The cost of college continues to rise, so the Comcast Foundation is proud to present these young people with the Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship in recognition of their hard work, leadership and commitment to their communities," said Bill Wright vice president, Comcast Twin Cities Region. "These students represent our future leaders and they embody Comcast's belief in giving back to the communities where we live and work."
A commitment to community service is an essential component in the selection of winners of Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarships. Each year, Comcast works with high school principals, guidance counselors and school administrators to select the scholarship recipients.
Benjamin was selected for his involvement with Prescott Community Recreation, the Prescott High School Blood Drive and his church. He will attend the UW Eau Claire.
The Comcast Foundation has awarded 145 Twin Cities-area students with $1,000 one-time scholarship grants toward college educations since 2004. Nationally, Comcast has awarded almost $10 million since the program began eight years ago.
