Science fair is education and fun

by Laurel Menne

St. Joseph Catholic School held their annual science fair in the school cafeteria Thursday, March 24 from 9-11 a.m.

Students demonstrated their projects for both faculty, parents and each other. There was a lot of interest in each of the projects, and it was clear that a lot of work went into each experiment.

Peter Ironside, shown here with his project, said he had help from his dad making the video, but he clearly understood and enjoyed explaining the process of electroplating. His video demonstrated electroplating a key with copper.

Erich Zuelke and Jesse Ahlgren worked together on a project showing the dangers of second-hand smoke. They had both pictures of lungs before and after exposure to second-hand smoke.

Zuelke and Ahlgren also used a homemade spirometer to check the lungs of adults and children exposed to the smoke and showed their results on a chart. Their project also included a handout on Web sites that explain more about the dangers of smoke and how to quit smoking.

Students clean up around Prescott

by Shalena Janis

For an annual Earth Day project, Middle School students participate in a community service program to clean yards of retired teachers from Prescott's school district.

Groups of students were designated to two homes in the city, where they racked and cleaned up yards for Earth Day.

Other students were all around the city cleaning along city streets and ditches. They started around 9:30 a.m. and finished around 10:30 a.m.

Even though Earth Day was Tuesday, April 22, they were out and about Wednesday. Yard conditions were too wet for students to rake Tuesday, so the school postponed the event until Wednesday, April 23.

The yards belonged to residents and retired teachers Kay Harris and Alice Heckel.

Students brought their own cleaning materials, such as rakes, and gloves. The raked leaves were picked up and thrown in bright blue bags.

These bags lined Jefferson and Locust streets when students were finished with the yards for city trucks to pick up.
