A 1954 Buick that went through thin ice on the St. Croix River two weeks ago causing the death of Raymond Hedquist of St. Paul was removed from the icy water last Saturday.

Zeiment Towing Service and Midwest Excavating Co. of Roseville, Minn., worked together on the project.

First attempts to remove the car were made last Friday, however, the efforts failed. Saturday, saws were brought to the scene and a 12-foot channel was cut through the ice all the way to shore and the car was pulled up onto the bank.

Vern Schmidt of Midwest Excavating Co. suffered a minor injury on Friday when a cable broke striking him on the back of the head, knocking him unconscious and causing lacerations.

A $317,780 judgement was upheld and all motions filed including one for a new trial were denied by St. Croix Circuit Judge Joseph Huges as a review of the Johnson vs. Christiansen, Forss, Ray trial was concluded.

The judgement awarded by a St. Croix County jury in a week-long trial that ended Nov. 24, 1981was the second trial of the defendants.

Three former police officers were charged with using excessive force that caused injuries to Glenn W. Johnson, Plum City, as he was arrested in Prescott for speeding in November 1972. The initial award by a St. Croix County jury was for $116,000. That decision was appealed, with the Wisconsin State Supreme Court ordering a new trial.

Prescott Mayor Dean Hauschildt said the city had agreed, with Ellsworth, to pay costs of the trial on a 60 (Ellsworth) 40 (Prescott) split for defense purposes only. Who and how, the $317,780 judgement will be paid is another question, Hauschildt said.

At the time of the arrest, Christiansen was a Prescott police officer. He is now county sheriff. Forss and Ray were Ellsworth police officers at the time of the 1972 arrest.

10 Years Age

Feb. 6, 1997

When Prescott city clerk Jan Huppert submitted her resignation after 20 years on the job, she cited a negative work environment as a primary factor in her decision.

Her observations now appear to have been accurate and are borne out by the somewhat unexpected resignations of the remaining two city office workers, Dave Hovel and Connie Gilles, last Tuesday. Both have been with the city since 1991.

Huppert cited that she had been treated unfairly in wages and benefits as compared to other department heads and that current working conditions for her had become intolerable.

Neither Hovel nor GIlles would make public comment as to why they left.
